We have been wondering for quite some time when will ASUS release a new flaghip tablet. I mean, the latest such slate from the Taiwanese manufacturer has been released sometime in Q2 2012 – the Transformer Pad Infinity, but even that model is a slightly improved Transformer Prime (Infinity only brought a higher clocked Tegra 3 processor and a considerably improved screen).
ASUS Flagship
Since then, ASUS released the good old Nexus 7, and a bunch of other entry/mid-range tablets (the ASUS Memo Pad Smart series) and the experiment called the ASUS FonePad.
Well, it looks like the current situation is about to change as the manufacturer apparently has a new flagship tablet in the making. Join us after the break to see what’s what.
Just today, an ASUS tablet with model number K005 has passed through the FCC with support for GSM 850, GSM 1900, WCDMA Band II, WCDMA Band V, LTE 2, 4, 5, and LTE 17 support.
Even better, some of the tablet’s specs have been revealed via FCC’s documents. The ASUS K005 will feature a quad core Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon 4 Pro CPU clocked at 1.7 GHz and a 6560mAH battery.
We don’t know yet what the final name of the tablet will be but we can make some assumptions. As some of you might know, the next Google Nexus 7 was rumored to feature exactly the same CPU.
However, by looking at the FCC snapshot, it looks like the K005 is a 10 inch (or bigger) slate.
We also know that the 10 inch ASUS Memo Smart Pad has model number K001 and that the recently released Pad Fone was codenamed K004. Based on the same assumption, that this is a 10inch (or bigger tablet) we will eliminate the Pad Fone from the equation. Therefore our best bet is that the K005 will be a new entry in the Memo Smart Pad Series. However, it’s not out of the question for this to be a new Transformer, given ASUS’s inconsistency when it comes to its products model numbers.
What do you think? Could this be a new Transformer? Let us know in the comments section.
